Samples Are A Girl’s Best Friend

posted by Wendy May 16, 2017 0 comments

Marilyn may have been right about a few things and diamonds are pretty high up on the list, but in the beauty stakes, samples are a girl’s best friend!

The French are glad to freeze their faces

They delight in using ice

But I prefer a brand who gives samples of all things nice

A jar in the hand might be quite continental

But samples are a girl’s best friend

A gloss may be grand

But it won’t pay the rental

On your humble flat or help you at the laundromat

Shops grow cold as girls grow old

And we all lose collagen in the end

But square cut or round shaped these packs don’t lose their shape

Samples are a girl’s best friend!

I save mine up and take them on trips

If you’re a Hey Big Spender at the cosmetics and skincare counters, or even if you are not, there is a way to try before you buy, and to stock up on some yummy things. Many companies and department stores have an in-built policy to give samples to those that ask and some of them offer without an ask: Kiehls is so far the best I’ve come across, and their samples are brilliantly packaged, making them superb for adding to your holiday packing so you don’t have to take big sizes of everything with you. I usually manage to save enough samples to have skincare and hair stuff for trips, saving on baggage allowance  and extra purchasing once you land. Just a thought! Charlotte Tilbury and other brands offer free samples with online shopping but it’s worth asking at the counter too. Don’t be shy – they want you to try their stuff!

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling

Here’s a nifty little trick to do if you have a metal-tubed highlighter pen like the cult classic Touche Éclat from YSL Beauty. Don’t throw them away when they run out xo

Beautiful Brows

posted by Wendy February 27, 2016 0 comments

Madonna was my eyebrow hero, before eyebrows got all weird and huge and painted or tattooed. There was a time when people were NOT walking around with the same enormibrow. So here’s a way to keep your brows beautiful if you haven’t already done something crazy to them: run a tiny bit of hair product or vaseline through them for shape and shine. It’s a pretty little trick.

Have a few disposable mascara wands in your brush kit, or keep a wand once the mascara has run out, for grooming.

Let’s Get Physical – When and How to use Sunscreen

posted by Wendy February 8, 2016 0 comments

Use a broad-spectrum physical sunscreen (i.e, not a chemical one) which will protect against UVA and UVB rays, on your face, décolletage and hands every day, rain or shine. Put it on all your loved ones too. It sounds annoying but it won’t be in the long run. A physical sunscreen protects your skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun’s rays, with titanium or zinc oxide. A chemical sunscreen works by absorbing the sun’s rays. Some chemical filters can scatter sun rays, but still mostly just absorb them. Sunscreen goes on over your other skincare, so after moisturiser but before makeup. Many foundations have sun protection built right in, which is great. Exposure to sun is the one thing that can age your skin the most. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply then UVB and are primarily responsible for premature skin aging and wrinkling. UVA rays also cause skin damage at the cellular level. UVB rays damage the outer levels of the skin and play a key role in the beginning of skin cancers. So take this stuff seriously.

This year I used a lot of Sun Bum sunscreens, which I happened to find on holiday.sunbum Sun Bum is a fairly new company from Florida whose sunscreens are broad spectrum, paraben free, water resistant for up to 80 minutes, hydrate with Vitamin E and aren’t tested on animals. The products are recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. They also make an excellent hair sunscreen, cos hair gets damaged by sun exposure too!

For facial sunscreen I really like Kiehls Super Fluid UV Defense SPF 50+ – Sun care which is virtually weightless. You can even get men to wear it; it’s so “not there” they can’t seem to find any objection to it haha. I also like Sonya Dakar’s  MicroVenom SPF 30 “age-reversing” sunscreen with properties of synthetic snake venom and Apple Stem Cell technology.

Don’t forget!  Some sun exposure is good for us and allows the body to build up Vit D which is essential for good health. Twenty minutes of daily sunlight without sunscreen is allowable!

To be safe in the sun, here are some recommendations from SUNBUM:

  • Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out into the sun
  • Reapply every 2 hours, or right after swimming or sweating. If you know you’re going to be swimming or sweating, use water resistant sunscreen to keep you protected for longer
  • Use SPF15 or higher to help reduce risk of skin cancer and don’t forget ears noses, shoulders, chest and neck
  • 90% of UV rays can get through and fry you on cloudy days
  • Reflection off snow and water can increase exposure by 50%. Snowboarders and water-skiers take note!
  • UV levels increase 4% for every 1000ft in altitude
  • In the hottest months, try to limit your time in the sun when it’s hottest, which is between 10am and 2pm. Perfect for a nap time anyway! Staying in the shade (i.e. the cabana) reduces exposure by 50%!

FASHION as FUNCTION….Fab clothing also protects you! I always wear an enormous 70’s style sunhat and the biggest sunglasses known to mankind. In fact I wear sunglasses all year round to protect the skin around my eyes from sun damage. Make no apologies for that xo

To Prime Or Not To Prime

posted by Wendy February 8, 2016 2 Comments

Use your foundation as eyeshadow “primer”, which is basically something for shadow to adhere to to make it last longer. Foundation (not a powder one) will even out skin tone on your eyes, giving a blank canvas for your eye products. Save yourself time and money by not buying an extra product; I never use them.
